Collections

I’m just starting this page, which I hope will evolve into an annotated list of both private and institutional collections of U.S. Filipino (early to mid-20th c.) and Filipino American (mid-20th/early 21st c.) documents. Please contact me at okir2k@gmail.com if you have information you’d like to contribute. A brief summary of the collection, its location and curator(s) would be helpful. Thanks.

Manilatown (San Francisco) Archival Project.
868 Kearny St. at Jackson St.) San Francisco, CA 94106. Contact evelynluluquisen (at) manilatown.org. Open for public research at the I-Hotel, Manilatown Center.

The early stage of the archival project was to use photos, footage, oral histories gathered during the existence of Manilatown and the I-Hotel anti-eviction movement to create DVDs. For example, “Rise of the I-Hotel” a film produced by Malaya Productions retells the history of the rebuilding of the I-Hotel and the opening of its doors in 2005 (Cabading,2005). Then, the archives were managed by Mitchell Yangson and Isaac Obenzinger who focused on archiving the oral histories through a partnership with the Freedom Archives. As more materials needed to be preserved, digitization continued (Habal, personal communication, 2008).

Currently, the archives collects, digitizes and makes accessible digitized and born-digital materials for public use. Excerpted from About the Manilatown Archives.
